ABSTRACT
Although many babies thrive on cows milk mixtures, some become hypersensitive to cows milk and develop such allergic ailments as mild skin rash, simple colic, nasal or respiratory symptoms, or, occasionally, an infant may become desperately ill from allergic shock. When a few drops of cows milk are put on the tongue of the unusually hypersensitive infant, he may even die of milk allergy.
In general pediatric practice up to 3 % of infants develop sensitivity to cows milk during the first few months of their lives, according to Dees, Collins-Williams and Breslow. However, because of my special interest in infants who are feeding problems, the incidence of allergy to milk in the babies I see in my own practice is almost 6%.
The substitution of soy bean milk for cows milk for a period of about 48 hours will rid the infant of his allergic syndrome. Re-feeding cows milk will cause a recurrence of the allergic syndrome. This sequence provides all the clinical proof that is necessary to make the diagnosis that the baby is allergic to cows milk. The infant should be fed a soybean milk formula for at least the next four months, during which time he may develop hyposensitization through abstinence to cows milk.
The most common allergic syndromes occurring in infants hypersensitive to cows milk will be described under the following headings: (a) dermatologic syndromes, (b) gastrointestinal syndromes, (c) respiratory syndromes, (d) cerebral syndromes, and (e) constitutional syndromes. This listing does not include all possible adverse reactions that may result from allergy to cows milk in infants.
Early recognition and specific management of this type of allergy in infants may minimize the possibility that the individual will develop more serious allergies to other materials as he grows older. With proper treatment of his milk allergy, the infant should be able to grow and develop, mentally and physically, as normally as any non-allergic child.
